Title: Alexander Berkman

Description: Homestead, Pennsylvania, July 23, 1892: Alexander Berkman (1870-1936), a Russian immigrant and anarchist, center, holding pistol, fires three bullets into Henry Clay Frick (1849-1919), sitting left in chair toward viewer, American industrialist and the manager of the Carnegie Steel Company; Berkman then stabbed Frick, but company employees came to Frick's rescue and beat Berkman unconscious (Berkman thought that the killing of Frick would spark a worker's revolution in America, but just the opposite took place); Frick survived and Berkman was convicted of attempted murder and sentenced to twenty-two years in prison; he was released fourteen years later in 1906 and rejoined fellow anarchist Emma Goldman (1869-1940), American anarchist, who was also his lover; both were later deported to Soviet Russia where both died.
