Description: A. Mitchell Palmer (Alexander Mitchell Palmer; May 4, 1872-May 11, 1936), American politician and fifty-first U.S. Attorney General (1919-1921), who launched the controversial "Red Raids" in 1920, arresting thousands of suspected anarchists, communists and socialists thought to be part of a plot to violently overthrow the U.S. government and in response to a bevy of bombs mailed and delivered to leading American politicians and business leaders in 1919, as well as explosions killing large numbers of victims (Wall Street Bombing of September 16, 1920, killing thirty-eight persons) attributed to "Reds" as a result of the federal raids, briefs for which were supplied by a young U.S. Department of Justice attorney, J. Edgar Hoover, dozens of those arrested were later deported to Soviet Russia as undesirable aliens.
