Title: Bruno Richard Hauptmann (1899-1936)

Description: Bruno Richard Hauptmann (November 26, 1899-April 3, 1936), at right during his 1935 trial, charged with the March 1, 1932 kidnapping and murder of Charles A. Lindbergh, Jr., the son of famous aviator Charles A. Lindbergh. Hauptmann, a German immigrant with a criminal record (he had been convicted and imprisoned in Germany many years earlier for breaking and entering, using the same modus operandi employed in the Lindbergh kidnapping) would be convicted and executed in New Jersey's electric chair on April 3, 1936. Although some claimed Hauptmann was innocent, overwhelming evidence clearly indicated his guilt. A large amount of the ransom money was found on his premises and he was identified by two witnesses as the man receiving that ransom. Further, the kidnapper's home-made ladder was proven to have been pieced from boards taken from Hauptmann's garage.
