Title: Clyde Tolson and J. Edgar Hoover, 1942

Description: Clyde Tolson (Clyde Anderson Tolson; May 22, 1900-April 14, 1975), left, and FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover (John Edgar Hoover; January 1, 1895-May 2, 1972), at right. As Associate Director of the FBI (1947-1972), Tolson was responsible for the Bureau's personnel and discipline and was the protégé of Hoover. Like Hoover, Tolson was a bachelor. He worked closely with Hoover during the daytime and they took their meals together in after-work hours, as well as taking vacations together where Tolson acted as Hoover's personal bodyguard. Tolson was considered Hoover's alter-ego, but there is no evidence that the men had any sexual relationship together. FBI members described their close association as fraternal. Tolson inherited Hoover's $550,000 estate and moved into Hoover's house following the Director's death in 1972. He accepted the U.S. flag from Hoover's coffin and, upon his death three years later, Tolson was buried a few yards from the grave of Hoover in the Congressional Cemetery in Washington, D.C.
