Title: Cardinal Mazarin (1602-1661)

Description: Cardinal Mazarin (Jule Mazarin; July 14, 1602-March 9, 1661), French Catholic prelate and prime minister of France (1642-1661), who succeeded his mentor, Cardinal Richelieu (Armand Jean du Plessis de Richelieu; September 9, 1585-December 4, 1642). An able administrator and statesman, Mazarin was a master of compromise, as well as a collector of art, rare books, and jewels--he bequeathed the "Mazarin diamonds" to Louis XIV (The Sun King; September 5, 1638-September 1, 1715). Mazarin was also a superb spymaster, controlling an army of domestic and foreign spies, an Intelligence service that provided him with detailed information on all foreign and domestic enemies of France and was thus able to maintain order within his country as well as anticipate any military ambitions against France.
