Title: KGB Headquarters, Moscow, USSR

Description: KGB headquarters in Moscow, USSR, in 1980. The KGB is the national security agency of the Soviet Union, as well as its foremost internal security, intelligence and secret police operation, known as FSB since 1995. Its origins and foundations were rooted to the Okhrana, the State Secret Police under the Czars, which evolved into the Cheka, organized by the Bolsheviks in December 1918, with subsequent agencies entitled GPU (February 1922), OGPU (July 1923), NKVD (1934), GUGB (July 1941), NKGB (April 1943), MGB (March 1946), MVD (March 1953), KGB (1954), FSK (1991), FSB (1995). This much-dreaded and oppressive agency was, for most of its history, a terror organization that preyed upon the Russian people as well as combated other foreign intelligence agencies and which for years used an assassination arm called SMERSH that murdered countless Russian and foreign citizens. Its interrogations of suspects were held in the basements of the vast Lubyanka (Lubianka) Prison in Moscow, which acted as torture and execution chambers, and was part of KGB headquarters in the building shown in this photo, erected in 1897 and is located at Lubyanka Square in Moscow, Russia.
