Title: Anthony Quayle (1913-1989)

Description: Anthony Quayle (Sir John Anthony Quayle; September 7, 1913-October 20, 1989), British actor, director, shown when he was a secret agent for SOE (Special Operations Executive) in WWII. Educated at Rugby and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, Quayle joined the Old Vic in 1932, appearing in stage productions and films until he became a British Army officer in WWII, then becoming an agent for SOE, serving as a liaison officer with Resistance fighters in Albania, an experience he related in a novel, Eight Hours from England (1945). In 1944, he served as an aide to the British governor of Gibraltar, describing that experience in another novel (1947). Although he was uncomfortable in talking about his SOE experiences, he obliquely portrayed those experiences while portraying a spymaster in the 1961 film, The Guns of Navarone, where he played a British spymaster working behind Nazi lines with Resistance fighters (albeit in Greece).
