Title: Wilhelm Canaris (1887-1945)

Description: Wilhelm Canaris (January 1, 1887-April 9, 1945), German Admiral, chief (1935-1944) of the German Abwehr (German Military Intelligence) and a member of the German Resistance and plot to kill Adolf Hitler. Canaris served as an intelligence officer in Spain in WWI, and, in 1917, became the captain of a U-Boat, credited with sinking eighteen ships. A member of the Freikorps, a right-wing paramilitary organization, he reportedly helped to assassinate several German left-wing activists immediately after WWI and during the 1920s, including Karl Liebknecht (August 13, 1871- January 15, 1919); and Rosalia "Rosa" Luxemburg (March 5, 1871-January 15, 1919), leaders of the Spartacus Group in Berlin and founders of the German Communist Party. Seeing service in the German Navy in the late 1920s and early 1930s, he was appointed chief of the Abwehr on January 1, 1935, establishing German espionage networks throughout Europe. Canaris worked secretly against Hitler before WWII, providing information to British Intelligence (SIS; MI6), and worked in collusion with the British to successfully bribe Spanish dictator Francesco Franco (December 4, 1892-November 20, 1975) and his top generals, so that Spain would remain neutral during WWII. He undermined Hitler's military operations throughout the war and subtly made the Abwehr as ineffective as possible without being detected. He was identified as being part of the abortive plot to assassinate Hitler in 1944, and was arrested, put into a concentration camp and murdered shortly before the end of the war.
