Title: Allen Dulles (1893-1969)

Description: Allen Dulles (Allen Welsh Dulles; April 7, 1893-January 29, 1969), Director (1953-1961) of U.S. Central Intelligence (U.S. Central Intelligence Agency). Dulles, a graduate of Princeton University, served in the U.S. diplomatic service until becoming a deputy director of OSS (Office of Strategic Services), U.S. intelligence, during WWII. He operated a spy network out of Switzerland during WWII, which proved so effective that he was the top candidate to head U.S. Intelligence following the war. During the so-called Cold War, the CIA under Dulles conducted many covert operations, removing anti-American foreign leaders from their posts through various coups and even assassinations, but Dulles viewed such clandestine operations necessary to combat communism. Dulles’ intelligence career came to an end with the ill-conceived CIA plan and abortive execution of the Bay of Pigs Invasion of communist-held Cuba (April 17, 1961-April 19, 1961), where the CIA financed a group of Cuban rebels attempting to overthrow the regime of Fidel Castro (b. August 13, 1926). The failure of this invasion caused Dulles to resign his CIA post and he was replaced by John McCone (John Alexander McCone; January 4, 1902-February 14, 1991).
