Title: Wilhelm Tranow, German Code Breaker

Description: Wilhelm Tranow, an English language specialist who headed the German Intelligence division, B-Dienst, broke the British Naval Cipher No. 3 in February 1943, which allowed German submarines commanded by Admiral Karl Donitz (September 16, 1891-December 24, 1980) to sink dozens of Allied ships in two Atlantic convoys in March 1943. The Royal Navy, however, abandoned Cipher No. 3, leaving Tranow and his code breakers to struggle in breaking the next codes.
