Description: Union sailors and soldiers from the Federal fleet of fifteen warships carrying 12,000 troops sailing from Fort Monroe, lands and occupies the Confederate bastion, raising the U.S. flag and gaining an important toe-hold along the Atlantic seaboard between Charleston and Savannah; both Fort Walker and Fort Beauregard were shelled into silence within five hours by the warships commanded by Flag Officer Samuel F. Du Pont, which fired twenty-four shells per minute, causing the thinly garrisoned Rebel defenders to abandon both forts;
