Description: Crewmen from the minesweeper USS Quail, under their skipper, Lieutenant Commander John H. Morrill (wearing pith helmet, standing second from right), refused to surrender to the Japanese at the time Corregidor capitulated on May 6, 1942, and, with sixteen of his crew members, escaped from Fort Hughes in Manila Bay in a 36-foot long diesel motor launch (shown here), and sailed 1,900 miles to Port Darwin, Australia, arriving a day before this photo was taken; Morrill, who wrote a stirring book about his exploits, South from Corregidor (1943), retired from the U.S. Navy as a Rear Admiral; Morrill's experiences were obliquely profiled in part in the 1950 film American Guerrilla in the Philippines;
