Description: One of eighteen U.S. battleships, center left, hurls salvos of shells onto the western coast of Okinawa, where troops of the U.S. Tenth Army's XXIV Corps and III Amphibious Corps are shown in amtracks heading toward the Hagushi beaches; these troops quickly swept inland across the south-central part of the island, which was 463.7 square miles and was the largest of the Ryukyu Islands; this was the largest amphibious assault in the Pacific Theater during the war; Okinawa was the last pitched battle of the war, lasting 82 days with 548,000 Allied personnel involved against more than 120,000 picked Japanese troops; the Allies lost 12,513 killed and 38,916 wounded, while all of the Japanese combatants were killed or committed suicide, except approximately 10,000 taken prisoner or surrendered; an estimated 40,000 to 150,000 civilians were killed, many committing suicide at the orders of Japanese officers;
