Title: Female SS guards, Germany, April, 1945

Description: Female SS guards are forced to bury the bodies of victims at the Nazi concentration camp of Bergen-Belsen (or Belsen), 1940-1945, in Germany, a camp liberated by British troops, appalled at finding more than 60,000 emaciated prisoners and more than 13,000 corpses laying about the premises unburied; guards had murdered more than an estimated 120,000 persons at this camp, half of whom were Jews, the others mostly Russian prisoners of war; the shocked British liberators found train cars packed with rotting corpses; Czech writer and painter Josef Capek (1887-1945), who invented the word "robot," and who was the brother of celebrated author Karel Capek, died in this camp, as did the sensitive diarist Anne Frank (Annelies Marie "Anne" Frank; 1929-1945);
