Title: Alexander Pechersky

Description: Alexander Pechersky (Alexander Aronovich Pechersky; AKA: Sasha; 1909-1990), Russian-born Jew, music school director, and Soviet soldier captured by German troops on the Eastern front in 1941; he was sent on September 23, 1943 to the Nazi SS-controlled death camp, Sobibor; on October 14, 1943, Pechersky organized and led a revolt where several SS and Ukrainian guards were killed as the prisoners broke from the weakly-guarded camp; more than fifty, including Pechersky, escaped and remained free, surviving the war, while many others were shot to death while attempting to escape; those remaining behind were exterminated by the Nazis before, only days after the mass POW uprising and escape, the camp was closed on direct orders of SS leader Heinrich Himmler;
