Title: Nachum Remba

Description: Nachum Remba (1910-1943), Jewish-Polish resistance fighter, the secretary of the Warsaw Kehililla, the official administrative body of the Jewish Warsaw community; from 1942 on, Remba established a fake medical station at Warsaw's Umschlagplatz, a staging area where Jews taken from the Ghetto by Nazi forces awaited shipment in trains to Treblinka, the SS death camp; while wearing a long white coat, Remba pretended to be a physician, selecting those Jews that were "too ill to make the journey East" and persuading Nazi guards to allow them to go to his nearby "hospital," which was staffed by legitimate Jewish physicians and nurses; from there, these rescued Jews, including children hidden under the large coats of some of Remba's nurses, were smuggled back to the Ghetto, some out of the city to safety; Remba kept up this ruse until he was captured by Nazis in May 1943, following the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising; he was sent to a concentration camp and murdered on November 3, 1943;
