Title: Ernst Rohm, Bad Harzburg, Germany, 1931

Description: Ernst Rohm (1887-1934), third from right at a Nazi Party rally, German leader of the SA (Sturmabteilung; Storm Battalion), the Nazi Party militia, which, in 1934, numbered more than four million and which party leader Adolf Hitler dismantled that year, having its leaders, including Rohm, arrested and executed on charges of treason, a ruse to get rid of what Hitler and other Nazi leaders thought posed a threat to their power; shown next to Rohm at left is Heinrich Himmler (Heinrich Luitpold Himmler; 1900-1945), who is considered to be the all time mass murderer of modern history in tandem with his superior, Adolf Hitler, whose genocidal orders he fanatically carried out; Himmler, as Reichsfuhrer-SS, headed the dreaded Schutzstaffel (SS), supervising all police and security forces in the Third Reich, as well as the Gestapo, the German secret police; he was also responsible for overseeing all concentration and extermination camps and headed the Nazi persecution of the Jews and anyone opposing the Hitler regime, held directly responsible for the systematic murder of more than six million Jews and another six million dissidents, Catholics; POWs, homosexuals, or those physically deformed, mentally unbalanced or representing minorities or those deemed "unfit" under the Aryan supremacy codes established under the Third Reich; Himmler was captured by British troops at the close of the war while disguising himself as a German army private; once identified and before he could be thoroughly interrogated, he committed suicide by swallowing poison on May 23, 1945;
