Description: Reich President Field Marshal von Hindenburg (Paul Ludwig Hans Anton von Beneckendorff und von Hindenburg; October 2, 1847-August 2, 1934), left, with his son Oskar von Hindenberg (Oskar von Beneckendorff und von Hindenburg; January 31, 1883-February 12, 1960); Paul von Hindenburg was the second president of the German Reich; he reluctantly appointed Adolf Hitler (April 20, 1889-April 30, 1945) as Chancellor of Germany on January 28, 1933 and died the following year; Hitler then declared the office of President vacant and, as "Fuhrer and Reichskanzler," made himself Germany's head of state; fuhrer is the German word for leader or guide; Oskar von Hindenburg was aide-de-camp to his father, but then became a loyal Nazi, served in the German Army during World War II, and survived the war without being accused of war crimes;
