Title: Rebecca (1940)

Description: Poster for 1940 feature film: Rebecca, starring Laurence Olivier (Laurence Kerr Olivier; May 22, 1907-July 11, 1989) and Joan Fontaine (Joan de Beauvoir de Havilland; October 22, 1917- ), directed by Alfred Hitchcock (Alfred Joseph Hitchcock; August 13, 1899-April 29, 1980). In this sophisticated suspense film, Fontaine is a shy secretary to a dominating wealthy American socialite visiting in France where she meets and falls in love with Olivier, a rich widower, marrying him and moving to his huge estate and large mansion in England. As the new mistress of the mansion, she is forever reminded of Olivier's first wife and her mysterious death. She learns that the dead woman, Rebecca, cheated on Olivier with a lover, George Sanders (George Henry Sanders; July 3, 1906-April 25, 1972), who surfaces to accuse Olivier of murdering his former spouse and attempts to blackmail Olivier in the process. The unbalanced housekeeper of the mansion, eerily played by Judith Anderson (Francis Margaret Anderson; February 10, 1897-January 3, 1992), who is obsessively devoted to her deceased mistress, attempts to undermine and bedevil Fontaine. (Anderson's pathological passion for her dead mistress borders on necrophilia, a subject Hitchcock greatly expanded upon in his 1958 production of Vertigo and even more so in his 1960 film Psycho.) The true, strange fate of Rebecca is finally discovered, while Olivier's lunatic housekeeper has her fiery revenge.
