Description: Battle of Monterey; an 1846 lithograph depicting Monterey, capitol of California, during the battle there on September 21, 1846, during Mexican-American War (1846-1848); the three-day battle was an early victory for U.S. troops led by General Zachary Taylor (November 24, 1784-July 9, 1850); known as "Old Rough and Ready," he led American troops to victorious battles in the Mexican-American War and in previous wars, and became the 12th President of the United States (March 4, 1848 until he died in office on July 9, 1850); the war was a U.S. and Mexican territorial dispute between the Nueces and Rio Grande Rivers that led to open war between the two countries on May 13, 1846; the war ended with U.S. troops in possession of California, the Southwest, northern Mexico, and central Mexico from Veracruz to Mexico City; in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, Mexico ceded to the U.S. the territories of California and New Mexico and all the land up to the Rio Grande River, and also relinquished its claim to Texas; in return, the U.S. paid Mexico $15 million;
