Title: Che Guevara

Description: Che Guevara (Ernesto Guevara; June 14, 1928-October 9, 1967); Argentine Marxist revolutionary and a major figure of the Cuban Revolution, an armed revolt led by Fidel Castro (Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz; August 13, 1926- ) that led to the overthrow on January 1, 1959 of U.S.-backed Cuban dictator Fulgencio Bastista (Fulgencio Batista y Zaldivar; January 16, 1901-August 6, 1973); "Cuban Revolution" also refers to the Cuban social and economic improvement programs implemented after the revolution by the Castro government; Castro served as Prime Minister of Cuba (1959-1976) and has been dictator and head of the Communist Party of Cuba since Bastista was deposed in 1959); Guevara was a physician; wanted by the C.I.A. (U.S. Central Intelligence Agency, a civilian intelligence agency of the U.S. government) for his revolutionary activities, Guevara hid out in Bolivia where, on orders of Bolivian President (1964-1969) Rene Barrientos (Rene Barrientos Ortuno; May 30, 1919-April 27, 1969), he was executed by being shot nine times at close range with rifle bullets; since his death, Guevara has become a countercultural symbol, especially in Cuba where he is remembered as much as a hero as a revolutionary, albeit he was early on branded a political serial killer, who attempted to import dictatorial Marxist regimes in many Latin and South American countries without success with generally unreceptive populaces and governments;
