Title: Akihito

Description: Akihito (December 23, 1933- ), 125th emperor of Japan, in office since 1989; twentieth most senior monarch or lifelong leader; world's only reigning monarch whose title is customarily translated into English as "emperor;"

Study Application Notes: Son of Emperor Hirohito, Akihito is much loved by the Japanese people. Despite his constitutional position, he has issued several wide-ranging statements of remorse to Asian countries for their suffering under Japanese occupation during the second world war, including an expression of remorse to China in 1989. Akihito has demonstrated strong compassion and is widely regarded as a stable and beneficient monarch.

Background Information: Shortly after a devastating earthquake and tsunami struck northern Japan in March 2011, Emperor Akihito made an unprecedented television address to Japan, expressing his concern for the survivors of the disaster, thanking the rescue teams, and asking the Japanese people to act with compassion "to overcome these difficult times."
