Title: Jed Smith

Description: Jed Smith (Jedediah Strong Smith; 1799-1831), American trapper, hunter and explorer of the Rocky Mountains and the American West Coast; Smith blazed trails along the Columbia River, the Wind River and discovered the South Pass of the Rockies to open up a route to California and Oregon for future frontier-seeking settlers, surviving countless perils—a massacre by Arikara Indians, a mauling by a grizzly bear—while, at the age of twenty-six, established a record of taking 668 beaver pelts in one season; he was the first known white man to travel overland from the Rocky Mountains to California, the first to cross the Great Salt Lake desert, the first to cross the Sierra Nevada from west to east, and increased interest in the U.S. in the development of the West Coast by being the first white man to travel overland from southern California to the Pacific Northwest; he was killed by a banding of Comanche Indians while scouting for water along the Santa Fe Trail in May 1831;
