Description: Major-General James H. Doolittle (James Harold Doolittle; AKA: Jimmy; 1896-1993), shown center with some of his U.S. Army Air Force pilots in Tunisia, 1943; Doolittle was best remembered for leading the first retaliatory raid on mainland Japan, following the Japanese sneak attack on Pearl Harbor, Oahu, Hawaii, on December 7, 1941; Doolittle, on April 18, 1942, led the first of sixteen B-25s on that raid, for which he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor; his bombers flew from the American carrier USS Hornet (CV-8) on its mission to drop sixteen tons of bombs on mainland Japan; all of the planes were lost following the raid; of the crews, eleven men were killed or captured, five interned in Russia, and the remaining sixty-four smuggled through to Allied lines by the Chinese underground working in Japanese-occupied China; the Doolittle Raid was profiled in the 1944 film Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo (with Spencer Tracy playing Doolittle) and briefly in the 1976 (preface) film Midway, and the 2001 film Pearl Harbor (with Alec Baldwin playing Doolittle); the grim fate of eight American crewman captured by the Japanese was portrayed in the 1944 film The Purple Heart;
