Description: The British supply base at Gallipoli comes under fire from Turkish artillery (smoke from an exploding shell at left), 1915; in a drastically mismanaged amphibious operation, French, British and Australian troops landed at various points near and at Gallipoli, a strong British force landing on April 25, 1915, but all of these troops were so lackadaisically led that it was days before Allied commanders thought to move off the beaches and, by then, strong Turkish forces were well entrenched in commanding positions on the heights surrounding the beaches and pinned the Allied forces there for months until the invasion was called off and all Allied troops withdrawn by January 9, 1916; the Allies suffered overall casualty losses of 250,000 out of 480,000 men committed, while the Turks suffered equal casualties, but managed in their stout defense, to hold the Dardanelles and successfully block all aid to Russia by the Allies through this essential route;
