Description: A German field gun abandoned during the Battle of Lys River (April 9, 1918 -April 29, 1918); in a second 1918 effort to drive the British Expeditionary Force into the Sea, General Erich Ludendorff (Erich Friedrich Wilhelm Ludendorff; April 9, 1865-December 20, 1937) sent the Sixth German Army under the command of Ferdinand von Quast (1850-1934) along the Lys River in Flanders, overwhelming a Portuguese division and driving back British troops, until Allied reinforcements stopped the German thrust, which gained ten miles of territory, including Messines Ridge, long-held by the British, but at a cost of 350,000 German casualties; Allied casualties, mostly British, totaled 305,000;
