Title: Battle of Stalluponen, August 17, 1914

Description: German soldiers march along a dusty road in East Prussia to meet the invading Russian forces (Russian Invasion of East Prussia; August 17, 1914-September 14, 1914) during World War I. These troops fought at the Battle of Stalluponen (August 17, 1914), the opening battle of World War I on the Eastern Front, one which was tactically won by the Germans and where they suffered more than 1,200 casualties, inflicting more than 5,000 casualties on the enemy and taking 3,000 Russian prisoners. This minor victory did not delay the Russian juggernaut of two huge invading Russian armies, one of which, the Russian First Army, was attacked by German forces at the Battle of Gumbinnen (August 20, 1914), the first major German offensive on the Eastern Front, a battle won by the Russians where they inflicted 14,500 casualties upon German forces, while suffering more than 16,000 casualties, forcing the Germans to retreat.
