Title: Battle of Ancre Heights, October 8, 1916

Description: Canadian troops of the Canadian 4th Division of the Canadian Corps storm toward the German front at the Battle of Ancre Heights on October 8, 1916, during the overall Battle of the Somme (July 1, 1916-November 18, 1916), one of the costliest battles of World War I, claiming more than 1.2 million casualties on both sides. These troops assaulted the German lines, but found that barbed wire there was intact, instead of shredded by artillery fire and machine gun fire cut them down and turned them back. The Canadians, poorly led by Lieutenant General Sir Julian Byng (September 11, 1862-June 6, 1935), gained only about 1,000 yards in the ten-day battle at Ancre Heights.
