Title: Battle of Messines, June 14, 1917

Description: A destroyed bunker used by German troops, along with weapons and helmets taken from German prisoners by British troops at the Battle of Messines (June 7, 1917-June 14, 1917), a decisive Allied victory in WWI. This battle was launched by the British Second Army under the command of Field Marshal Herbert Plumer (March 13, 1857-July 16, 1932). Plumer was considered one of the best field commanders on the Western Front in WWI, a meticulous planner who sought to minimize his casualties (he was critical of the suicidal assaults ordered by his superiors in the war) and was much loved by his men. Before sending his troops forward to capture the vital German stronghold at Messines Ridge, he had hundreds of sappers tunnel beneath the German defenses where they planted nineteen mines, detonating these mines simultaneously just before the attack and creating the loudest explosion ever heard on the Western Front to that time. The British achieved all their objectives within a short time, but at the cost of more than 23,000 casualties, while German casualties exceeded 25,000.
