Title: Edmund Allenby (1861-1936)

Description: A sketch by British artist Francis Dodd (1874-1949) (Not Shown) of British Field Marshal during World War I, Edmund Allenby (Edmund Henry Hynman Allenby; April 23, 1861-May 14, 1936). One of the most brilliant British commanders in WWI, Allenby employed visionary tactics and strategies (developed from his experiences in the Boer War) in combating Central Powers forces in the Middle East. At the Battle of Megiddo (September 19, 1918-October 1, 1918), Allenby soundly defeated and routed Turkish forces by using the then revolutionary tactics of combining mobile cavalry, infantry and airplanes in concentrated attacks—the precursor to the German blitzkrieg tank tactics of Erwin Rommel, Heinz Guderian and Hasso von Manteuffel in WWII—which culminated his successful Palestinian Campaign of 1917-1918.
