Title: School Fire, Chicago, Illinois, 1958

Description: Hundreds of anxious parents and neighbors gather outside the gutted remains of the two-story Our Lady of the Angels Roman Catholic Elementary School, where a roaring fire claimed the lives of ninety-two students and three nuns, injuring another 100 persons, mostly children; the blaze began in the basement when a pile of rubbish caught fire and trapped the children in many rooms, blocking off escape routes in corridors and on stairways; one courageous nun saved several students by ordering her children in a second-floor room to enter a smoke-filled corridor and to crawl under the heavy smoke and she then literally rolled them down a staircase, saving their lives; other nuns, priests, firemen and neighbors saved hundreds of children, but others were consumed by the flames or jumped to their deaths from the high second-floor windows; the fire began about 2:30 p.m., a half hour before the school's 1,500 students would have been dismissed; there was no sprinkler system in the school and the fire alarm was not set off until fifteen or more minutes after the fire began; stricter fire codes and safety precautions were established in all Chicago schools following this terrible catastrophe;
