Description: An imoverished farm woman and her two children stranded along a rural road after the family vehicle broke down; she and her husband had been displaced from their Missouri farm that had turned to sand after the topsoil of the Great Plains had been blown away through years of poor cultivation and planting, drought, dust storms and abnormal hot, dry seasons of the 1930s, an image coupled to the Great Depression, where farm prices were driven down, crops failed and tens of thousands of farmers left or were evicted from their farms in the Dakotas, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma and the Texas Panhandle, many traveling nomadically along Route 66 to California where they were not welcomed and where they eked livings through slave wages paid to fruit pickers; agriculture; cultivation; Depression; farming; farms; droughts; dust storms; crop failures; fruit pickers; horticulture; plains; plant biochemistry; plant breeding; plant physiology; plant propagation; planting; recession; soil erosion;
