Description: The balloon entitled the City of New York (or the Great Western) designed by Professor T. S. C. Lowe (Thaddeus Sobieski Carlincourt Lowe; 1832-1913), American aeronaut, scientist and inventor, which was intended to make a transatlantic crossing from New York to Spain, a small side-wheeler steamboat suspended from the airbag as a would a wicker basket, so that, should the if the balloon went flabby in mid-ocean, the passengers could proceed by ship; the protuberance at the right-end of the vessel is not a gigantic foghorn but a rudder; several New York financiers contributed to the construction of this airship, but it was never completed due to a series of misfortunes, albeit Lowe did go on to create for the U.S. Army Signal Corps a series of balloons that were used by military observers during the American Civil War; aeronautics;
