Title: Alice Beatrice Jones

Description: Alice Beatrice Jones, shown with her parents; she was a domestic servant and the daughter of a struggling black cab driver, right, who married Leonard "Kip" Rhinelander (1903-1936), American heir to a $100 million fortune, in 1924 after a four-year courtship; Rhinelander sued the next year for an annulment, claiming that his wife had concealed her half-black ancestry, but his claims were shattered in court when he admitted that he had lived in the Jones residence for some time in New Rochelle before the nuptials so there could be no fraud committed on the part of his bride; the annulment proceedings provided the tabloids of the day a sensational news story where the passionate love letters between Jones and Rhinelander were published, then in a day when miscegenation (marriages or cohabitation of mixed races) was taboo; the annulment was denied and Rhinelander obtained a divorce in Nevada, agreeing to pay Jones a settlement of $31,500 and $300 a month for life; annulments; half-castes;
