Title: Fiorello La Guardia

Description: Fiorello La Guardia (Fiorello Enrico La Guardia; AKA: The Little Flower; December 11, 1882-September 20, 1947), right, Mayor of New York City; conducting an orchestra at Parents' Day in Central Park; a short, squat Republican elected as mayor of New York City because of voters' dissatisfaction with a scandal-tinged Democratic Party; told a cheering crowd at his inauguration: "I don't owe you a thing and you're not going to get a thing;" a staunch advocate of clean government and opposed to corruption, he became the country's most popular and colorful mayor, reading the Sunday newspaper comic pages to children over the radio each week; mayor of New York City for three terms (1934-1945); supporter of Franklin Delano Roosevelt (1882-1945)'s "New Deal" and guided New York City's recovery during the Great Depression; was called "The Little Flower" because of his small stature and it is Italian for his first name; subject of a Pulitzer Prize winning Broadway musical, Fiorello!
