Title: "Fleeing a Dust Storm;"

Description: Famous photograph by Arthur Rothstein (1915-1985) showing a farmer and his two children approaching a building on their farm that was nearly buried under mounds of topsoil turned into dust; Rothstein called the photo "Fleeing a Dust Storm;" he was one of several noted photographers whose work depicted the devastation caused by the drought and dust storms in the Great Plains states that began in 1930 and continued most of the decade, during the Great Depression; the agricultural and social disaster resulted in the U.S. Congress passing the Soil Conservation Ace of 1935; John Steinbeck (John Ernst Steinbeck, 1902-1968), told of the plight of those displaced by the Dust Bowl disaster in his 1939 novel, The Grapes of Wrath, for which he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize; the book was filmed as The Grapes of Wrath (1940 U.S. film); many other movies were made about the Dust Bowl and its effects on American lives;
