Description: Walter Reuther (Walter Philip Reuther; September 1, 1907-May 9, 1970), American labor leader, shown during the automobile workers strike against the Chrysler division of General Motors for higher wages and better working conditions in 1937; American labor union leader and liberal supporter of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal, who led the United Automobile Workers Union (U.A.W.) to become a major player in the auto industry and in the Democratic Party during the 1930s Great Depression years; Reuther, his wife Mary, architect Oscar Sonora, and a bodyguard and pilot and co-pilot of a chartered plane were killed when it crashed on May 9, 1970 near Pellston, Michigan; President Bill Clinton (William Jefferson Clinton; William Jefferson Blythe III; AKA: Bill; August 19, 1946- ), forty-second President of the U.S. (1993-2001) awarded Reuther the Presidential Medal of Freedom posthumously in 1995;
