Description: Eleanor Roosevelt (Anna Eleanor Roosevelt; October 11, 1884-November 7, 1962), left, and Marian Anderson (February 27, 1897-April 8, 1993), an African-American contralto and one of the most accomplished singers of the twentieth century; Anderson had been denied being allowed to sing in public at white occasions, so President Franklin D. Roosevelt (Franklin Delano Roosevelt; FDR; January 30, 1882-April 12, 1945) and his wife Eleanor Roosevelt arranged an open air Marian Anderson concert on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. on Easter Sunday, April 9, 1939; more than 75,000 people of all colors attended the event, which was broadcast nationwide and heard by millions;
