Description: Photograph of Horatio Gordon Bottomley (1860-1933) (center, with associates); A convicted swindler, he was orphaned at the age of four, later became a tailor's presser, then publisher, financier, and Independent M.P. (Member of Parliament) for South Hackney in 1906; Called a patriot during the First World War and the government's "most able recruiting sergeant," he visited British troops in the trenches; While editor-publisher of John Bull, a publication that exposed fraud, he swindled victims out of thousands of pounds in two phony World War I bond investment enterprises, the Premium Bond scheme and the Victory Bond Club; Convicted of fraud in 1922, he was expelled from Parliament and sentenced to seven years in jail; Released in 1927, he became a one-man music hall entertainer and died penniless in 1933
