Title: Battle of Jarama, 1937

Description: A machine gun bunker manned by members of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade in the trenches on the Jarama Front (Febuary-June 1937) in Spain. The Battle of Jarama was fought on February 6, 1937-February 27, 1937, when Fascist forces attacked the Republican defenses along the Jarama River, forcing back the Republican army, but were unable to break through to Madrid. The Abraham Lincoln Brigade fought on the Loyalist side during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) and consisted of volunteer fighters from the U.S., most of whom were communists, socialists or anarchists, but some were simply those who wished to support the free Second Spanish Republic (1931-1939), which was attacked by Fascist forces (Falange) led by General Francisco Franco (December 4, 1892-November 20, 1975), who was supported by Spanish Carlist and Nationalist factions, as well as Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy, both of these countries sending troops, planes and equipment to defeat the Spanish Loyalists. The Abraham Lincoln Brigade was disbanded in Spring 1938. More than 1,000 of the 3,000 volunteers that fought in this brigade were killed during the Spanish Civil War.
