Title: Repatriated Loyalist Veterans, 1938

Description: Charles Barr and Maurice Conway, two volunteers, who had fought in the International Brigades on the Loyalist side of the Second Spanish Republic (1931-1939) during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) are shown on board ship, about to return to the U.S. Both had been captured and were repatriated in 1938, and both were more fortunate than others meeting the same fate, who had been executed by fascists led by General Francisco Franco (December 4, 1892-November 20, 1975). Franco was supported by Spanish Carlist and Nationalist factions, as well as Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy, both of these countries sending troops, planes and equipment to defeat the Spanish Loyalists throughout the war and largely contributing to Franco's victory in 1939.
