Title: Countess Du Barry

Description: A painting of the Countess du Barry (Jeanne Becu; August 19, 1743-December 8, 1793), a courtesan and the last mistress of French King Louis XV (February 15, 1710-May 10, 1774), grandfather of French Queen Marie Antoinette (November 2, 1755-October 16, 1793); the countess and Marie's mother, Empress Maria Theresa (May 13, 1717-November 29, 1780), were never on friendly terms since in her first letter to the future empress, the countess wrote of her as "the stupidest and most impertinent creature imaginable;" the countess was tried during the French Revolution (1787-1799), was found guilty of treason, and beheaded; the portrait shown depicts her as a royal court page playing a guitar, painted by French portrait artist Francois Hubert Drouais (December 14, 1727-October 21, 1775);
