Beauregard (Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard; May 28, 1818-February 20, 1893), American military officer, engineer, civil servant, politician and the first prominent general in the Confederate Army during the Civil War, becoming the first brigadier general in the Confederate Army and initiating the bombardment of Fort Sumter at Charleston, South Carolina, on April 12, 1861, as well as winning the first great land battle of Bull Run (AKA: First Battle of Bull Run; First Battle of Manassas; July 21, 1861), although his military achievements diminished as the war progressed, except for saving the Confederate defenses of Petersburg in June 1864 and thus saving the Confederate capital of Richmond, Virginia;
