Title: Don Carlos Buell

Description: Don Carlos Buell (March 23, 1818-November 19, 1898), American military officer (USMA, 1841), a major general in the Civil War where he commanded the Union Army of the Ohio in two major battles, the Battle of Shiloh (AKA: Battle of Pittsburgh Landing; April 6-7, 1862) and the Battle of Perryville (AKA: Battle of Chaplain Hills; October 8, 1862) in Kentucky, both strategic Union victories; Buell, however, failed to pursue the smaller retreating Rebel army in Kentucky and for this, and other reasons (he was suspected of harboring Southern sympathies because he had inherited slaves), President Abraham Lincoln removed him from command and, after receiving no further appointments during the Civil War, he left the military service on May 23, 1864;
