Title: The 39 Steps (1935)

Description: On the set of the 1935 film, The 39 Steps, with Madeleine Carroll (Edith Madeleine Carroll; February 26, 1906-October 2, 1987), Robert Donat (Friedrich Robert Donath; March 18, 1905-June 9, 1958), and, at right, director Alfred Hitchcock (Alfred Joseph Hitchcock; August 13, 1899-April 29, 1980). This tense spy film, made in England, was one of Hitchcock's first big international hits that established him as a master of suspense films. Though he made many exterior shots for this film, Hitchcock, as he did with most of his films, relied upon sets for his major scenes to better control the action and the actors' deliveries (note the overhanging microphone--Hitchcock religiously insisted on clearly understood lines spoken by his actors, unlike today's mumbled and garbled deliveries). This is a set of a rural bridge in Scotland under which Donat and Carroll hide from pursuing secret agents.
