Description: Union merchant seaman held prisoner in the hold of the CSS Alabama, a complaining POW forced back at bayonet point by Rebel sailors holding rifles; the CSS Alabama (1862-1864), was a 10,500-ton screw sloop-of-war built for the Confederate States Navy by John Laird Sons, Birkenhead, U.K., the most dreaded commerce raider during the Civil War, which attacked, burned and sank numerous Union merchant and naval vessels before it was sunk by the Union warship USS Kearsarge off Cherbourg, France, on June 19, 1864, following a fierce naval battle; the Alabama had a crew of 145 officers and men and was commanded by Admiral Raphael Semmes (September 27, 1809-August 30, 1877);
