Description: More than 2,200 pounds of gunpowder, planted beneath the Confederate lines at Vicksburg, Mississippi, by Union sappers, explodes (at top left), on June 5, 1863, while the Union division commanded by Major General John A. Logan (John Alexander Logan; February 8, 1826-December 26, 1886) attack; the Federal assault was repulsed by energetic Confederate counter-attacks where Union troops were caught and slaughtered in a crater created by the explosion, a similar fate befalling Union troops a year later during the siege of Petersburg, Virginia; Vicksburg nevertheless surrendered on July 4, 1863 to Major General Ulysses S. Grant (Hiram Ulysses Grant; April 27, 1822-July 23, 1885);
