Description: Union Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant (Hiram Ulysses Grant; April 27, 1822-July 23, 1885), sitting right center, signs the document already signed by Confederate General Robert E. Lee (Robert Edward Lee; January 19, 1807-October 12, 1870), sitting left, where Lee has surrendered his Army of Northern Virginia, in the parlor of the McLean farmhouse at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, April 9, 1865; Grant allowed Lee generous terms, issuing food to the starving Confederate army as well as allowing all Rebel officers to keep their side arms, swords, baggage and mounts, and permitting all Confederate soldiers owning a horse or mule to take that animal home with him "for Spring planting" following the surrender, many of the Union generals present took "souvenirs" from the parlor, including furniture, pictures, even throw rugs;
