Title: Drawing Depicting the Arrest of Lewis Paine

Description: A drawing depicting the arrest of Lewis Paine (AKA: Lewis Payne; born Lewis Thornton Powell; April 22, 1844-July 7, 1865), one of the conspirators in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln (February 25, 1809-April 15, 1865), sixteenth President of the U.S. (1861-1865); Paine, age twenty, was the son of a Baptist minister; Paine's part in the plot was to murder Secretary of State William Henry Seward (May 16, 1801-October 10, 1872); said to be dull-witted, Paine was captured at the boarding house owned by Mary E. Surratt (Mary Elizabeth Jenkins Surratt; May/June 1834-July 7, 1865); she was later hanged with Paine as conspirators in the assassination; she also was the mother of John Surratt (April 13, 1844-April 21, 1916), who was accused of plotting to kidnap and assassinate Lincoln; he fled the country after Lincoln's murder but was later extradited and the statute of limitations had expired on most of the charges against him so he was not brought to trial;
